The Birth of LotusChina & Production Story Part 1

 Nice to meet you, I’m asa_Peach from asapidock, a company that sells 3D costumes for VRChat.

 I will write about what I focused on when making the costumes and what I did during the production process here on this site.
 This is my first time writing something like this and it may be difficult to read, but I will try to make it as easy to understand as possible.

0.0. Summary Story

 LotusChina has been worn by many people, but I think the best selling point is the nice Chinese mafia-style big-ass jacket.

 In this page, we hope that you will learn about the birth and production of this jacket and think, “Wow, I didn’t know there was such a process.

1. trigger

 I’ve been creating 3D costumes for about a year and a half since I opened Booth, and I thought it was time to make a Chinese dress. However, I was troubled by the fact that there are so many nice-looking Chinese costumes out there, such as those of Nato, Shanha, and others, but I had a revelation: “Come to think of it, there isn’t a Chinese dress that looks like a big fucking jacket that a female Chinese mafia boss would wear,” so I decided to make something like that! That’s when I thought, “Let’s make something like that!

2. design this and that

 In the meantime, I’ll throw the following letters to my sister and wait for her output.

The following is what came out of the process. This is what the initial design proposal looked like.

 Compared to the current finished product, the shoes are quite elaborate, the jacket is not fluttering, and there is something Chinese on the sleeve.

 I thought, “Yeah, that’s good! I thought so, but after modeling and applying solid colors, I found that 、、、、 was not quite right.
When I let him walk, the guy with the sleeves doesn’t sway nicely, and it gets in the way (it’s just the way it is with yukata-type kimonos). So, we decided to reject it.

It was nice and sloppy when I moved it.

 I took off the sleeves and made it a regular jacket type, but it was a little short, so I added some fluttering to give it more volume, and it came together nicely, so I said, “OK.

 By the way, there are many ideas that have been lost, such as wrapping the fluttering to the arms, making the fluff of the coat very long, and putting in a lot of slits. It’s hard to find the right balance.

The one that I wrapped my arms in fluttering but it looked too thick, so I had to forfeit it.

3. modeling, weights this and that

 In the jacket modeling and weights, we did it with the idea of “making it easier to accommodate avatars” in mind. In particular, jacket weights are the same for all avatars.

 However, the range of influence when you move your arms, or how far and how much your abdomen bends when you twist at the waist, are also different. The range of influence when you move your arms, or how far you bend your abdomen when you twist at the waist, are also different.

 Based on that 、、、、, first of all, since there are Hips, Spine, and Chest in the abdomen, I will not weight the HipSpine, so if the Chest moves, the whole costume will move. This way, I don’t have to think about the belly/navel curvature, which is different for each avatar.

 In conjunction, the Shoulder Circumference is not made. The absence of the shoulder girth prevents the Chest and Shoulder&UpperArm from colliding. Each can be reduced to a stand-alone effect only.

 As for the elbows and wrists, the arm circumference is so fucking huge that there is enough room to penetrate, so it seems that only positional adjustment is needed.

 From the above, it will be easier to support avatars without the need to repaint weights. As for the jacket, I think it is easy to put on even a non-compliant avatar! (Tabun probably Maybee)

4.Unity Edition. To make it look natural

 Here I would like to talk about one point that we have tried to make the jacket look natural when you put it on and move.

 PositionConstraint is attached to the root that is swayed by the PB of the jacket to follow the left arm to some extent.

Like this. Set the coat to move 30% of the amount of movement of the bone below the elbow.

 With a jacket like this that rests on the arms, the entire costume must move with the arms when the arms are raised, or it will feel a little uncomfortable. There is quite a difference between with and without this. If you are concerned about this, turn it off and try moving the jacket in VR to see if you feel any discomfort.

 Constraints on the back side of the jacket also include restrictions on the direction of the axis of movement in addition to this. It is very difficult to explain, so I will spare you the details.

5. at the end

 The above is the story of the birth and production of LotusChina’s biggest selling point, the “Chinese mafia-style big fucking jacket. I think it ended up giving the impression of a female boss of the Chinese mafia, as I had originally intended.
